  • 2 limes, juiced – about 2 Tbsp fresh lime juice (the video shows 2 whole limes)
  • 2 cups ice cubes
  • For serving: extra lime slices and small watermelon wedges

Optional but good:

  • 1-2 tsp honey or agave if your melon isn’t super sweet
  • Fresh mint leaves

Equipment:

  • Large knife, blender – she uses a KitchenAid

How to pick the perfect watermelon – Look, Lift, Turn:

This is the key part she stresses in the video.

  1. Look: It should be symmetrical and free from bruises, cuts, and dents.
  2. Lift: Pick it up. It should feel heavy for its size, that means it’s juicy.
  3. Turn: Flip it over and look for a creamy yellow spot from where it ripened in the field. That’s the field spot. Sniff it too – sweet aroma = sweeter melon. Inside should be brilliant red. She recommends locally grown if you can find it.

Instructions:

  1. Prep the melon: Cut the watermelon in half, cut off the rind, and cube the flesh. Remove any large seeds if needed. For an even thicker slushy, freeze the cubes for 2 hours beforehand.
  2. Blend: Add the watermelon cubes to your blender, then add the fresh lime juice and ice.
  3. Blend until slushy: Blend on high until it’s thick, icy, and fluffy like a slurpee. If it’s too thick, add a splash of water. If you want it icier, add more ice.
  4. Serve immediately: Pour into those ribbed glasses, garnish with a lime wheel and a little watermelon triangle on the rim, add a glass straw.

It melts fast, so drink right away. Watermelon is great for hydration because of its water content and electrolytes, plus lycopene, vitamins, fiber and amino acids.

Pro tips from the video:

  • Chill your watermelon cubes first – less ice needed, more flavor.
  • Don’t add sugar unless you have to. A really ripe melon is sweet enough.
  • Want it boozy? Add 1.5 oz white rum or tequila per glass after blending.
